COMMUNICATION AS A MEANING GAME

COMMUNICATION AS A MEANING GAME

The evolution of communication

- The study of exploring how human language has evolved is the fundamental assumption that is built into our ‘language learning mechanism’.

- We therefore expect consistency between the way that language is spoken and how it is interpreted.

CHALLENGES IN COMMUNICATION

- Getting the message across efficiently (channels that you use, electronically efficient? convenient?)

- Getting the required feedback (consistency in ‘sent’ and ‘received’ message)

- Overcoming all environmental and personal barriers)

OVERCOMING COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES

- To know what you want to say

- Get to the point quickly (simple and short)

- Take responsibility for your communication skills and channels

- Respect the other persons point of view

- Concentrate on improving your skills and overcoming embarrassing blunders.

TQM- A MANAGEMENT APPROACH TO INSTILL QUALITY ACROSS THE BOARD (IN AN ORGANIZATION) TO ENSURE PRECISION AND QUALITY BASED CUSTOMER SERVICE (LECTURE NOTES HANDED OUT IN CLASS)

Strategy: ‘Pull them, don’t push them’ (By Kirk Bannerman)

Details of the idea:

- Getting more people to understand the use of technology while working, communicating and educating themselves

- Information technology has created diversified channels and opportunities for every segment of the population (civil service, professionals, students, housewives, the government and most importantly the media.

- Attract and magnetize interest with appropriate teaching methods as opposed to making the learning mechanism tougher.

ILLUSTRATION/ EXAMPLES

1. Internet- based home businesses where feedback and interactions are crucial

2. Network marketing - Online networks (enable users to send emails, participants in chat groups, bulletin boards, www etc

3. In term building – Network /Relationship Building.

In spite of all these opportunities, those who don’t learn or adapt will DEGRESS.

INTERNET PROBLEMS

The global spider web of interlocking computer networks has problems and manifests benefits as well. The following should be kept in mind while planning internet communication program:

a. Difficulties in finding information they desire through the complexities of the systems are frustrating.

b. Increasing search engines prioritize sites based on fee payment

c. Controversial problems of security, legal questions of copyright infringement, invasion of privacy, pornography etc

d. Time consuming procedures for online transactions or registration of products can be terminated by an error message that the procedure was not successful- affects reliability as a communication tool.

The internet is an evolving form of mass communication that fascinates participants that must pass through a trial and error period before its effectiveness is fully realized
